Max M. Kampelman

Max M. Kampelman joined the Firm in 1955, became a partner in 1957 and  is now serving as of counsel. He is resident in the Washington, DC office.

Ambassador Kampelman was chairperson of the Firm's Washington office from 1956 until 1985 when he was appointed by President Reagan to serve as Chairman of the United States Delegation on negotiation with the Soviet Union on nuclear arms reductions. His name was removed from the Firm's name when he entered government service. He returned to the Firm as "Counsel" in 1991.

Honors & Awards

Mr. Kampelman received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Clinton and the Presidential Citizens Medal from President Reagan. He has also received the Knight Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition, Mr. Kampelman was one of the first recipients of the Library of Congress "Living Legend" awards and has also received the distinguished "Publius Award" from the center for the study of the Presidency.

Professional Associations

Mr. Kampelman has held numerous diplomatic posts and government positions including: Ambassador to the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (1980-1983); Ambassador and Head of the United States Delegation to the Negotiations with the Soviet Union on Nuclear and Space Arms in Geneva (1985 to 1989); and Counselor of the Department of State (1987 to 1989).

Mr. Kampelman serves as Chairman Emeritus of the American Academy of Diplomacy, Georgetown University's Institute for the Study of Diplomacy and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. He also serves in numerous capacities at the American Bar Association.

Mr. Kampelman has served on the faculties of Bennington College, Claremont College, the University of Wisconsin and Howard University. In addition, he has served on the governing boards of a number of universities and has received 13 honorary doctorates. He currently serves on a number of corporate and not-for-profit boards.
